On June 4th, 2026, members of the Chicago community gathered at the Chicago Water Tower to commemorate Alexei Navalny on what would have been his 50th birthday.

Two years ago, Alexei Navalny was killed in Putin’s prison. On June 4, the day he would have turned 50, participants gathered to remember him and to continue speaking out for those who remain imprisoned for their beliefs.

Navalny once said:

“I still believe that everyone should have 15 minutes of fighting the regime every day. That is enough.”

Those words became one of the themes of the evening. Participants brought photographs, posters, personal stories, and their favorite quotes from Navalny. Some also brought copies of his book Patriot.

The signs carried messages about freedom, resistance, and responsibility for what is happening in Russia. One of the participants held a quote from Navalny:

“They kill people because they want to stay in power.”

For those who gathered, remembering Navalny was not simply about looking back. It was also about remembering the people who are currently imprisoned in Russia for their beliefs.

43 Postcards for Political Prisoners

An important part of the evening was the table hosted by the Letters to Political Prisoners. Illinois project. Participants had an opportunity to write and sign postcards to people imprisoned for their political beliefs.

A total of 43 postcards were signed during the event.

Particularly meaningful was the fact that five of the postcards were signed by Americans who stopped at the table, asked questions, and learned about the stories of political prisoners for the first time.

Volunteers spoke with visitors about individual prisoners, explained their cases, and helped people understand how to properly address and sign the postcards. It was especially encouraging to see people who had never encountered the issue before become interested, ask questions, and take part in the initiative.

Thank you to everyone who found their “15 minutes of fighting the regime” that evening.

Signing a postcard. Coming to a memorial gathering. Telling someone else about political prisoners. Supporting those who continue to stand up for their beliefs.

All of it matters.

The gathering was also covered by ABC7 Chicago.

The event was organized by Voice of Free Russia Chicago together with the Letters to Political Prisoners. Illinois project.

Remembering is an act. Solidarity is an act, too.

“They kill people because they want to stay in power.”

ABC7 Chicago.
